El prolapso de la válvula mitral se produce cuando la misma protuye hacia la aurícula izquierda durante la contracción del ventrículo izquierdo.
Se observa más frecuentemente en mujeres y en aquellas personas con síndrome de Marfan.
La mitral es una válvula que separa la aurícula izquierda del ventrículo izquierdo del corazón. La sangre, luego de ser oxigenada en los pulmones es llevada hacia la aurícula izquierda del corazón. Una vez llena se contrae, la válvula mitral se abre y la sangre pasa al ventrículo izquierdo. Desde allí y mediante la contracción del mismo, la sangre es enviada hacia la arteria aorta y se distribuye en todo el organismo. Para que la sangre no vuelva hacia la aurícula, es imprescindible que la mitral se cierre adecuadamente e impida el reflujo. El prolapso se produce generalmente por un estiramiento de sus fibras, por lo que al contraerse el ventrículo la válvula protuye hacia la aurícula.
Se observa más frecuentemente en mujeres y en aquellas personas con síndrome de Marfan.
Muchas de éstas personas presentan otras anomalías asociadas como laxitud de las articulaciones, escoliosis, tórax en embudo, etc.

El síndrome de Marfan es un modelo variable de anormalidades que pueden afectar al corazón, a los vasos sanguíneos, a los pulmones, a los ojos, a los huesos y a los ligamentos. Es uno de los más de 100 trastornos hereditario s del tejido conectivo (material que sostiene los tejidos del cuerpo juntos). A menudo, los individuos afectados son altos, delgados y de articulaciones flojas. Los brazos y las piernas pueden ser sumamente largos en proporción al torso. La espina dorsal puede tener una curva espiral (escoliosis) y el esternón puede sobresalir o parecer hundido. La cara puede ser larga y estrecha, con un paladar alto y los dientes apiñados.
Casi siempre son afectados los vasos del corazón y los vasos sanguíneos. Las válvulas del corazón, los pares o tríos de solapas que mantienen la sangre fluyendo en una dirección a través del corazó ;n, generalmente son muy grandes y flojas. Los movimientos de estas válvulas durante los latidos pueden permitir un breve flujo sanguíneo inverso y causar un murmullo del corazón (un sonido anormal que puede ser escuchado a trav&eacut e;s de un estetoscopio).
La arteria más grande del cuerpo, la aorta, es casi siempre afectada hasta cierto punto. Toda la sangre bombeada del corazón pasa fuertemente por la aorta, arteria que se divide para llevar la sangre rica en oxígeno a todo el cuerp o. Una aorta débil se dilata gradualmente y se puede partir en ciertos lugares, permitiendo fugas de sangre en el tórax o en el abdomen. Estas roturas grandes y súbitas pueden resultar en la muerte, como ocurrió con Flo Hyman. Además, las personas con el síndrome de Marfan son más susceptibles que otras al colapso súbito de los pulmónes.
